Comedie-Francaise Drops Handke Play
The Comedie-Francaise, citing the prominent avant-garde Austrian playwright Peter Handke's support for Slobodan Milosevic, the former president of Yugoslavia who died in March, has canceled plans to produce one of his works, Agence France-Presse reported yesterday. According to a spokesman, the decision by Marcel Bozonnet, the administrator of the theater company, not to present Voyage to the Sonorous Land, or the Art of Asking, an inquiry into language, was made after reading a report of Mr. Handke's presence at Mr. Milosevic's funeral in Serbia. Mr. Milosevic died while being tried on charges of genocide and war crimes. Mr. Handke, perhaps best known as a co-writer of the screenplay for "Wings of Desire," gave a eulogy at the funeral. Mr. Bozonnet told Le Monde, =The theater is a tribune; its effect goes far beyond the audience at a single performance.= He went on to say that even if Voyage to the Sonorous Land, originally scheduled for January, was not a piece of propaganda, a performance would lend the playwright visibility.

Pardon my Amurrican, but I don't wish to offend French sensibilities with mutterings in that beautiful tongue.
The play =DIE KUNST DES FRAGENS, oder die Reise in das sonore Land= happens to be a truly great play; it creates a profound and delicious sense of deep puzzlement in the audience, something that, ordinarily, is achieved only after years of psychoanalysis.
I havve known Herr Handke since 1966, personally feel some considerable justified ambivalence about him, little ambivalence if any about most of his work, whose early plays until UEBER DIE DOERFER [Par les Villages, I believe is its French title] and have written extensively on various aspects of Handke, including his involvemen in matters Yugo-Slavian. It appears Handke was following his grandfather's road in hoping for a continued federation, also as a counter model to the current European federation. Best as I can tell from this distant perspective that depends entirely on written texts and documentation, he is not guilty of denial of anything, but of not speaking in platitudes. Last year he published an essay in the German magazine LITERATUREN, in which he detailed why he would not appear as a defense withness at Slobodan Milosovic's trial, where I especially liked how he made fun of his own sense of self-righteousness. That he came out in simple defense of the Serbian people against the orchestrated attempt, in Europe and in the United States, to make them solely responsible for the disintegration of Yugo-Slavia I find worthty of the highest praise, as compared to no end of writers, such as Salmon Rushdie, who were only too ready to join the lyinching mob, or band wagon, as so many pret a porter intellectuals frequently are. Having disassociated himself from the defense of the more and more indefensible Slobodan Milosoviscs - as the trial proceeded and his entire history became available -- I don't think Handke needed to show up at the funeral, have his photo taken in front of a huge flag like photo of Milosevics, or make any kind of funeral oration. Herr Handke can be as petit bourgeois, exhibitionistic and obnoxious - the German word is BORNIERT - as Bozonet. THE ONLY THING THAT COUNTS in this instance is THE PLAY. I am glad that there is a controversy over a great play!

12:30:43 L'ecrivaine autrichienne Elfriede Jelinek, prix Nobel de Litterature 2004, se declare samedi =horrifiee= par la decision de la Comedie Francaise de deprogrammer une piece de son compatriote Peter Handke, parce que ce dernier a assiste aux obseques de l'ex-president yougoslave Slobodan Milosevic en Serbie.
=Je suis horrifiee que la Comedie Francaise fonctionne aujourd'hui comme une autorite de censure et retire de son programme une piece de Peter Handke=, ecrit Mme Jelinek dans un communique traduit en francais par le traducteur de ses oeuvres, Olivier Le Ray.
=En ne representant pas sa piece, la Comedie Francaise, au passe si riche, s'inscrit dans la pire tradition de ces institutions culturelles qui, au temps des dictatures, mettent au rancart les artistes genants et les condamnent au silence=, poursuit-elle.
=Quiconque empeche un artiste d'exercer son metier commet un crime non seulement contre ce poete mais contre le public tout entier. Un comportement de ce genre est le moins approprie qui soit pour rendre justice aux victimes du regime de Milosevic=, estime-t-elle.
Le Vieux-Colombier, une des trois salles de la Comedie Francaise, devait creer en 2007 la piece =Voyage au pays sonore ou l'art de la question=.
Selon le quotidien Le Monde, qui a revele l'affaire vendredi, l'administrateur general Marcel Bozonnet aurait decide de l'annuler apres avoir appris dans la presse la presence en Serbie, le 18 mars a l'enterrement de Milosevic, de l'auteur Peter handke.

Administrateur de la Comedie-Francaise, Marcel Bozonnet doit confirmer jeudi 4 mai, lors de la conference de presse de presentation de la saison 2006-2007, sa decision de deprogrammer la piece de Peter Handke Voyage au pays sonore ou l'Art de la question, qui devait etre mise en scene en janvier-fevrier 2007 au Vieux-Colombier par Bruno Bayen, par ailleurs traducteur de la piece (voir Liberation de vendredi 28 avril).
=Geste tres fort=. Cette decision intervient suite a la publication dans le Nouvel Observateur du 6 avril d'un echo faisant etat de la presence de l'ecrivain autrichien, le 18 mars, a Pozarevac, en Serbie, aux obseques de Milosevic. =Je suis heureux, avait declare Handke, d'etre pres de Slobodan Milosevic, qui a defendu son peuple= avant de reaffirmer que les Serbes etaient =les vraies victimes de la guerre=. L'ecrivain conteste certaines des informations relayees par l'hebdomadaire. Il dement en particulier avoir brandi le drapeau serbe et depose une rose rouge sur le cercueil de l'ex-president serbe.
Pour Marcel Bozonnet, cela ne change pas grand-chose quant au fond. =Aller a l'enterrement etait un geste tres fort. J'etais stupefait. J'ai lu ensuite la traduction de ses declarations publiees par l'hebdomadaire allemand Focus, qui sont edifiantes. ca plus tout le reste, que je n'avais pas lu avant : il y a de quoi grimper au rideau.= L'administrateur de la Comedie-Francaise a donc pris seul, comme il en a statutairement le droit s'agissant d'une piece programmee non pas salle Richelieu mais au Vieux-Colombier, la decision d'annuler le spectacle. Mais il a auparavant reuni son comite d'administration. =Tout le monde n'etait pas de mon avis, au nom du principe de separation entre l'auteur et l'oeuvre, ce que je respecte. Mais pour moi, ce n'etait pas possible. Et je crois qu'une majorite me comprend.= Pour expliquer sa decision, Bozonnet parle d' =outrage aux victimes=, en reference a une piece de Handke titree Outrage aux spectateurs. =Cette guerre, ajoute-t-il, nous avons mis trop longtemps a la decouvrir et a l'arreter. Et le malheur qu'elle a seme continue d'exister. Il y a dans la position de Handke un tel deni de l'Histoire, des faits, de la justice internationale... Comme si pour lui, plus rien n'avait d'existence.= L'administrateur du Francais dit ne pas craindre la polemique soulevee par cette annulation. =J'aurais pu faire les choses en douce, trouver un pretexte plausible pour choisir une autre piece. Mais je prefere assumer sans detours=.
=Temps de paix=. Bruno Bayen deplore pour sa part la decision =J'ai propose en 2004 la piece a Marcel Bozonnet. Elle avait ete publiee en allemand en 1989, et je l'avais traduite pour Gallimard en 1993. Quand la decision d'annulation a ete prise, il m'a ete propose de mettre en scene une piece d'un autre auteur. Apres reflexion, j'ai refuse ce remplacement. Et j'ai dit que s'il devait y avoir annulation, la chose devait etre rendue publique. Je suis evidemment contre cette decision. Je pensais que programmer Handke etait la marque d'un temps de paix.=
Les spectateurs de la Comedie-Francaise ne verront donc pas cette piece enigmatique, qui se deroule sur =un plateau au fin fond du plus recule des continents=. En 1995, au Theâtre Gerard-Philipe de Saint-Denis, Jean-Claude Fall avait mis en scene les huit voyageurs de ce periple initiatique. L'un d'eux y declare =En toute situation, nous devrions considerer ce jeu du questionnement comme un retour a la lumiere de notre monde le plus enfoui et le plus recule [...] il y serait toujours preferable de poser une mauvaise question que de ne pas questionner du tout: cela ne serait qu'une erreur, ceci serait une faute [...]= |

Dazu kann ich nur sagen, dass wenn mir mit Stuecken wie UEBER DIE DOERFER, DIE KUNST DES FRAGENS, DIE STUNDE ALS WIER NICHTS VON EINANDER WUSSTEN & ZURUESTUNGEN FUER DIE UNSTERBLICHKEIT, und DIE KUECHE dieser Preis nicht zugeschrieben wurde, ich doch meinen allerschwaechsten Aderlass nicht, moeglicherweise, den Preiss gewinnen lassen moechte.Handke feige? Jemand der seine ganze Karriere auf die vieleicht wahnwitzige Verteidigung der Serbischen Woelfe auf's Spiel gesetz hat? Wien (APA) - Seit laengerem war zwischen dem Oesterreichischen Bundespraesidenten Heinz Fischer und dem aus Kaernten stammenden Schriftsteller Peter Handke ein inoffizielles Treffen vereinbart gewesen. Der Zeitpunkt war zunaechst nur vage festgelegt, doch am heutigen Montag konnte der in Frankreich lebende Literat die Einladung Fischers wahrnehmen.
Zwar wird offiziell von einem "rein privaten Besuch" gesprochen, dennoch gibt Fischers Pressesprecher Bruno Aigner zu, dass die Besuche beim Praesidenten "nie ganz privat" seien. Das einstuendige Gespraech zwischen den beiden sei "sehr angenehm und interessant" gewesen. Ueber die Gespraechsthemen wurde nichts bekannt. Fischer wuerde Handke in seinem kuenstlerischen Schaffen sehr schaetzen, so Aigner.

Rein privat= war der Besuch von Peter Handke am Montag bei Bundespraesident Heinz Fischer. Nahezu privaten Charakter hatte auch eine Buchpraesentation mit Peter Handke Dienstagmittag im Klagenfurter Musilinstitut.
Einmalig. "Ungewohntes zu ungewohnter Stunde" kuendigte Verleger Lojze Wieser an, und Hausherr Klaus Amann betonte, dass diese Veranstaltung im Gegensatz zu ihrem Titel keine Wiederholung finden werde. Dass der scheue [that's news indeed]Schriftsteller bei einem seiner seltenen Kaerntenbesuche inmitten eines Publikums sitzt, das - wohl eine Folge der dezenten Ankuendigung - nicht in erster Linie zum Handke-Schauen ist auch ziemlich einmalig.
Prachtbaende. Sein Konzept, das gegen die Zeit steht (Klaus Amann) macht den poetischen Anschauungskuenstler Handke zum idealen Paten und Teil eines Projekts. Denn der Wieser-Verlag wagt eine besondere Wieder-Holung. In einer Kassette legt er fuenf Prachtbaende schwarz-goldener originalgetreuer Neuausgabe vor.
Weltbilder. Es sind die bis heute umfassendsten Wörterbuecher für das Sprachenpaar Slowenisch-Deutsch von Matej Cigale (1860) und Maks Pletersnik (1894/95), sowie eine zweisprachige Ausgabe von Peter Handkes Roman Die Wiederholung/Ponovitev, in dem das Pletersnik-Woerterbuch eine zentrale Rolle spielt: Das alte Woerterbuch wirkte auf mich als Sammlung von Ein-Wort-Maerchen, mit der Kraft von Weltbildern, wird Handke zitiert. Wieser hatte den Pletersnik-Band 1984 in einem Antiquariat aufgestorbert und dem damals am Salzburger Moenchsberg lebenden Dichter gegeben.
Kasette. 2005 kann man nun eintauchen in die Welt von rund 200.000 zum Teil ausgestorbener Woerter (wie etwa das inzwischen ausgestorbene poprijemba fuer Wiederholung). Mit der Kassette wird, so der Literaturwissenschafter Klaus Amann, der Autor an die Seite einer Sprache gestellt, die er Mitte der siebziger Jahre als seine Muttersprache wiederentdeckte. Nachsatz: Und gluecklicherweise haben wir einen Verleger, der so wahnsinnig ist, das auch zu machen. Diese Art der Wieder-Holung hat allerdings ihren Preis: 550 Euro (Subskription), spaeter dann 750 Euro kostet die in guten Buchhandlungen erhaeltliche Prachtausgabe. |
